Frequently Asked Questions
Directions
Follen Church is at 755 Massachusetts Avenue in East Lexington, near the intersection with Pleasant Street (close to Wilson Farms). It is a white octagonal clapboard church with a pointed steeple, across the street from a brick Catholic church and beside the Lexington East Branch Library (white, with two-story pillars). For detailed directions scroll down to the next entry.
Parking
- At the Follen Church Parking lot just across the street from the church.
- In the Waldorf School lots to the right and to the rear of the school. Look for the Waldorf sign at the entrance to the one-way driveway, just to the right of the East Branch Library (pillar building).
- Behind the one-story brick commercial building, two doors up Massachusetts Avenue from the church (toward Lexington Center).
- On the street on Mass Ave.
Is there a handicap-accessible entrance? Yes. It is on the driveway side (“Community Center entrance.” The elevator requires a key, so please either call the office in advance to make sure someone is there to help you, or come with a companion who can fetch the key from upstairs (just ask anybody).
Public Transport? Bus service is available every day but Sunday. Monday through Saturday, you can take “T” buses 62 and 76 that run from Alewife to Bedford. If you need a ride, please call the church office at 781.862.3805 × 205, to arrange for someone to pick you up.
Sunday Mornings at Follen
Dress: It ranges from “business attire” to casual. Spring and fall services may be warm, but there is usually a cross breeze in our octagonal sanctuary.
What about babies? While you may keep your children with you, Nursery Care with a professional caregiver is also available, from babies up to children of 4 to 5 years old. However, these older children would probably enjoy a Religious Education class held concurrently with the adult service.
What happens:
On most Sundays, Follen offers two worship services: a Family Worship service at 10:00 a.m. and an Adult Worship service at 10:30 a.m. Family Worship services typically take place three Sundays per month. Check the home page for the schedule, which is updated weekly.
The 20-minute, 10:00 a.m., Family Service for younger children and their parents includes dramatized stories, hearing what the kids have to say, and singing. During the break, children could go to their age-appropriate RE class, and adults could return for the adult worship service.
The 10:30 a.m., adult worship service includes:
- chalice-lighting,
- announcements,
- sharing of significant life events from the congregation (“joys and sorrows”),
- readings,
- prayers,
- listening to choral or instrumental music,
- singing congregational hymns,
- a sermon, and
- passing the collection plate.
A Hospitality Hour follows – with light food and beverages, lots of conversation, and the chance to browse the “tables” and learn more about UUs, or sign up for a class or a social service project. The gathering breaks up at about 12:15 p.m.
